EXPLORING MUSCLE MEMORY
The following quote was typed and recording in five separate intervals:
"People ask, How did you get in there? What they really want to know is if they are likely to end up in there as well. I can’t answer the real question. All I can tell them is, It’s easy." Girl, Interrupted, Susanna Kaysen
To pursue questions regarding muscle memory, I recorded processes in a way that generated visual patterns. In this exploration, I isolate the act of typing on a keyboard, one that requires the ability of muscles to remember in order to complete.For this investigation, I chose to type one quote five separate times. I recorded the action of typing by placing transparent paper over my laptop keyboard and typing on top of the surface with gesso-painted fingers. As I continued to type the quote, the marks made on the page became increasingly organized. I believe the refinement of marks to be evidence of muscle memory.
